Can You Change Your Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan Anytime?

Great question—and the answer is “qualified yes.”

You can apply to change your Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan at any time during the year. However, whether you’re approved for the new plan depends on your health status and whether you’re within a guaranteed issue period.

Why is the answer “qualified”? Because most Medigap applications require medical underwriting.

If you are:

  • Within a guaranteed issue window, or
  • Healthy with no disqualifying conditions or medications

…you can usually switch plans—whether to a new company or a different plan with your current company—without issue.

However, if you are outside a guaranteed issue period and have certain health conditions or take specific medications (for example, blood thinners like Eliquis), your application will likely be denied.

The good news? Even if you’re denied a new plan, you cannot be dropped from your current Medigap policy as long as you continue paying the premium. Medigap plans are guaranteed renewable for life, no matter how sick you become.
